What is Word?

A word count is the number of words in the assessed body of your assignment. UK departments differ on what is excluded, but the reference list, appendices and tables are commonly outside the count while footnotes and in-text citations are inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the word count include references?

Usually not. Most UK universities exclude the reference list and appendices but include in-text citations. Your module handbook is the authority.

How strict is the 10% rule?

Common but not universal. Some departments apply a penalty above the upper limit and none below it, others cap marking at the limit. Check the handbook.

How many pages is 2,000 words?

Roughly four pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman, or two pages single-spaced.
